Daily Work
Our daily work in this class was a lot of writing and a lot of talking about who we are as people. We learned about stereotypes and how from the moment we are born there are so many groups we need to fit into. We learned about typology, positionality, and stereotypes. We talked a lot about cultures and how each culture has different values, beliefs, experiences. In this class we broke down cultures in order to learn about society and talked about the five groups, personal and cultural knowledge, popular knowledge, mainstream academic knowledge, school knowledge, and transformative academic knowledge.
Stereotypes and Lenses
Another big thing that I learned in this class was about stereotypes and lenses, We talked a lot about James Baldwin and went to go watch a movie based on him and what he wrote called, “Not Your Negro” A lot of the times we judge people before we even know them based on what popular media says about them. We judge people not always for bad thing but always for what they look like, specifically race. And in this class I learn how to challenge those immediate thoughts and judgements by projects we did.
The "Unfair Project"For the unfair project we took pictures of our faces and we wrote different words that people/ourselves categorize us as. I chose to write both positive and negative things I have called myself or others have called me. I think this project is very important so people can be more aware of how words can affect us.
